MOBO Helps UK Grime Break America

It’s no secret. This year has been the year of Grime. After years of trying to breakthrough to mainstream, the underground music genre has finally done it. Stormzy and Skepta have both gained international recognition getting shout outs from the likes of Kanye West and Drake.

UK artists as a whole have been getting a lot of love actually. Of course the more main pop or RnB names such as Ed Sheeran, Jessie J, Rita Ora, Sam Smith and Adele have been recognised, but so has Krept and Konan, Skepta, Stormzy, Section Boyz, Little Simz and others. And we’re not just talking about the UK. We’re talking about America too.

Peter Rosenberg from HOT 97 has been especially interested in UK music recently, being spotted at a few gigs this past year. Krept and Konan, Stormzy and Skepta have all stopped by Rosenberg’s talk show to talk about their new music.

Therefore, we decided it was time for America to get a real taste of the UK music scene and we couldn’t think of a better way to do it than by having HOT 97 cover the 2015 MOBO Awards.

Scottie Beam from Ebro in the Morning and the HOT 97 crew hit the red carpet and backstage alongside MOBO TV to interview all the nominees and winners.

When Deanii (aka Scottie Beam) asked what people can do in America to help bridge the gap? Krept of Krept and Konan said,

“We just want you guys to listen. We’re not asking you to buy our music. Just listen and explore the UK, and listen to what’s going on over here.”

We heard you loud and clear, Krept. Let’s hope America did too!
